Fight heteronormativity in punk.
It seems these silly black uniforms we wear don’t set punks apart from dominant social norms and values in any substantive way – especially when it comes to gender and sexuality. It seems Punk is largely a bastion of heterosexual male bullshit, a niche market that certain bars cater to, where Men predatorily chat up decorative punk ladies, and address their discussion of records and esoterica to Other Men. In short, everything happens just like it would anywhere else, only with more studs. It’s certainly not a space that tends to comprehend or encourage any kind of queerness or deviation from a binary conception of gender – which leaves me feeling rather alienated and marginalized from my own scene. I guess I grew up with naïve visions of Punk being as rigorous as Crass, yet as queer and colourful as the Bromley Contingent, which is a fantasy, but one I’d prefer to keep believing in.
