Throbbing Gristle, “United,” United, 1978

It’s interesting to know that Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV, artists generally remembered as peerless artistic innovators, lingered on the periphery of the Positive/Anarcho-Punk scene, played the Centro Iberico in Harrow Road, and earned the esteem of the Kill Your Pet Puppy set for their Crowleyan underpinnings and sheer weirdness. Of course, David Tibet of Psychic TV (and later Current 93) derided Blood & Roses and the Positive Punk crowd as trendy poseurs and pretenders to the Magickal throne. Well, if a more genuine ‘understanding’ of Crowley ends in crypto-fascist claptrap, then I strongly prefer hairspray, candles and posing in Stoke Newington cemetery.
